The Horse Creek to Lake Pillsbury section of Eel River in California is 18 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V section. The natural beauty of Lake County and the water flowing gracefully down Eel River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you're coming from Clearlake it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside California you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so don't forget that
the rivers in this state are less manageable. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you
want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. The river winds through the Klamath Mountains and you get great scenery. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Horse Creek to Lake Pillsbury section is just one of many. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too.
Briefly about the general area: Through the warm months highs
here at Eel River reach the 90's, and through the night it cools down to the 50's. For the period of the winter highs are in the 50's; overnight lows at Eel River during the winter commonly sink into the 30's. Eel River is a reasonably wet place commonly with lots of rain; the
wettest month of the year is mostly January, that's the one that rains the most, and July is when it's the driest. You might want to pay a visit to Big Squaw Valley while you're here at Eel River.
