CLASS IV-V 18 miles
The Horse Creek to Lake Pillsbury stretch of Eel River is 18 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Clearlake, as you can see on the road map further down. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your
camp stove. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling spots. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You
might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. The beautiful Klamath Mountains scenery is an added bonus. The scenic beauty of Lake County and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far.
