county,
Lake Pillsbury to Bucknell Creek section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS III-IV 5.7 miles
This stretch of Eel River is 5.7 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. The starting point is not too far from Clearlake, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. The average California whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not
suitable for beginners. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of places for that. The river winds through the Coast Ranges and you get great scenery. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river
if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The beautiful scenery of California and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Lake Pillsbury to Bucknell Creek stretch is just one of many. The campgrounds here at Eel River are pretty good. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's good length for a morning trip.
Briefly about the general area: The high level of precipitation makes Eel River a reasonably wet place; during
the month of January you get the most rain around here; July on the other hand is the driest. Pine Mountain Spring is an inspiring spot to explore while here, and The Slides is an out of the ordinary site to pop by while at Eel River. High temperatures at Eel River during the
summer months are in the 90's, and the night is somewhat chillier of course, typically in the 50's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 50's; during the dark hours in the winter at Eel River temperatures drop to the 30's. Having a perfect time in the Coast Ranges is easy. A short tour to Pebble Spring is always worthwhile.
