If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The natural beauty of Mendocino County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you're coming from Ukiah it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Whitewater paddling here in the Coast Ranges is a
great experience. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The Close to Branscomb to Big Bend
stretch of Eel River - South Fork is 9.5 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good rivers for that around here. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too.
Briefly about the general area: Through the summer highs here at Eel River - South Fork reach the 80's, and the night is a bit
cooler of course, usually in the 50's. Daytime highs during the wintertime are in the 40's, and night lows in the 30's for Eel River - South Fork. Eel River - South Fork is a rather wet place mostly with a great deal of rain; the month with most of the rain is January, and the
driest of the months is July. A great location in the neighborhood of Eel River - South Fork is Dark Canyon, and Horseshoe Bend is an interesting site to pop by while at Eel River - South Fork. You just can't envision the amount of outdoors exciting things the Coast Ranges has to offer.
