The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Ukiah, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in California are often more challenging than in other states, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. in Mendocino County is 9.5 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. The
nature scenery of Mendocino County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling spots. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. The river winds through the Coast Ranges and you get great scenery.
Briefly about the general area: Summer brings highs in the 80's to Eel River - South Fork, and throughout the night it cools
down to the 50's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Eel River - South Fork are in the 30's. All the outdoors amusing things in the Coast Ranges will keep you coming back time and again. Eel River - South Fork gets a
good deal of water; most of the rain falls all through January while July is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Eel River - South Fork is close to Dark Canyon which is certainly worth checking out, and don't leave Eel River - South Fork without first checking out Horseshoe Bend.
