I worked with a man named Charlie Shelton in the seventies. He spent his child hood at Fordice mining and fishing with his father. He went to war in world war two and was captured by the Germans. When he came back he went to work for PG&E. Charlie passed away about 1985 or 1986. Charlie is buried in the new Auburn cemetery. To get to the point Charlie had a map of that region that his dad made comments on. Charlie and his dad spent years mining and fishing this area. One cabin at the base of Old Man Mountain was built by them. The map is on the north side
of Old Man Mountain. If you look at the bottom of the tailings under a large quartz rock. It is in a Prince Albert tobacco tin. All parts on the map are named and labeled. This includes the name of the old miners and points of mining interest. The last time I saw the map was 1981.
I have a picture of it taken at that time. Says Clint
This stretch of Fordyce Creek in California is 12 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV-V section of whitewater. The starting location is a short drive from Truckee-Grass Valley, as you can see on the road map further down. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. The nature scenery of Nevada County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and
some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so don't forget
that many runs in this state are not easy. This is the only paddling stretch along Fordyce Creek. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The Northern Sierra Nevada scenery is wonderful. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then
no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: Hiking along the Grouse Ridge Trail is splendid fun, and going for a hike along the Glacier Lakes Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this region.
