Fordyce Lake to Lake Spaulding section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV-V 12 miles
I worked with a man named Charlie Shelton in the seventies. He spent his child hood at Fordice mining and fishing with his father. He went to war in world war two and was captured by the Germans. When he came back he went to work for PG&E. Charlie passed away about 1985 or 1986. Charlie is buried in the new Auburn cemetery. To get to the point Charlie had a map of that region that his dad made comments on. Charlie and his dad spent years mining and fishing this area. One cabin at the base of Old Man Mountain was built by them. The map is on the north side
of Old Man Mountain. If you look at the bottom of the tailings under a large quartz rock. It is in a Prince Albert tobacco tin. All parts on the map are named and labeled. This includes the name of the old miners and points of mining interest. The last time I saw the map was 1981.
I have a picture of it taken at that time. Says Clint
The starting point is not too far from Truckee-Grass Valley, as you can see on the road map further down. This stretch of Fordyce Creek is 12 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of California and the playfulness of the water beats anything. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. Fordyce Creek doesn't
have a lot of paddling stretches, the Fordyce Lake to Lake Spaulding stretch is the only one. There's camping available near Fordyce Creek. When you're paddling down a Northern Sierra Nevada river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. Whitewater rafting
and kayaking spots in California tend to be more challenging than the national average, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places for that. There
aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
Briefly about the general area: Why not take a refreshing hike along the Grouse Ridge Trail, and
