The wonderful Del Norte County scenery and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in California are harder than the national norm, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Crescent City North, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whether you're whitewater
rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. The Bear Basin Road to Big Flat Road stretch of Hurdygurdy Creek in Del Norte County is 7.7 miles long and it is classified as a class V section by American Whitewater. The beautiful Coast Ranges scenery is an added
bonus. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. There are no other sections to paddle along Hurdygurdy Creek than the Bear Basin Road to Big Flat Road section. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came.
Briefly about the general area: For the period of the warm days of summer here at Hurdygurdy Creek, high temperatures usually reach the 60's while night lows are usually in the 50's. The wintertime
comes with highs in the 50's, and night lows in the 30's for Hurdygurdy Creek. All the water falling down from the sky makes Hurdygurdy Creek a wet place; the month with most of the rain is December; July on the other hand is the driest. Devils Gap is a fine place to take a look at close by.
