The starting location is a reasonable drive from Bakersfield, as you can see on the road map further down. This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Sandy Flat to Democrat Hot Springs section is just one of them. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The river winds through the
Southern Sierra Nevada and you get great scenery. The Sandy Flat to Democrat Hot Springs section of Kern River in California is 11.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-V section. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not
make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of rivers for that. The average California whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable.
