The starting location is a reasonable drive from Bakersfield, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The beautiful scenery of California and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. This section of Kern River in Kern County is 11.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-V section. The campgrounds here at Kern River are pretty good. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. There aren’t any hotels
right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places.
The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The beautiful Southern Sierra Nevada scenery is an added bonus. The Sandy Flat to Democrat Hot Springs section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff.
