California whitewater - Kern River, Kern County

Kern county, Democrat Hot Springs to mouth of canyon section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS V+     12 miles
This section of Kern River is 12 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class V+ section of whitewater. The scenic beauty of California and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camp stove. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving.
The starting point is not too far from Bakersfield, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come.
