  The Ruth Reservoir to Forest Service Road 5 miles below Highway 36 section of Mad River in Trinity/ Humboldt County is 12.2 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Trinity/ Humboldt County and the water flowing gracefully down Mad River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The beauty of the Coast Ranges is a great plus for this
    river. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in
California is often more difficult than elsewhere, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too.

Summer at Mad River comes with high temperatures in the 80's, and throughout the night it cools down to the 50's. For the duration of the winter highs are ordinarily in the 40's with temperatures
 
at Mad River dipping down into the 30's through winter nights. Tierney Canyon is a brilliant place to explore.
Mad River sees pretty high levels of rainfall; during the month of December you get the most rain around here, and the driest month of the year is July.
