The Ruth Reservoir to Forest Service Road 5 miles below Highway 36 section of Mad River in Trinity/ Humboldt County is 12.2 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Trinity/ Humboldt County and the water flowing gracefully down Mad River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The beauty of the Coast Ranges is a great plus for this
river. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling places. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in
California is often more difficult than elsewhere, so keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so why not pack your sleeping bag too.

at Mad River dipping down into the 30's through winter nights. Tierney Canyon is a brilliant place to explore. Mad River sees pretty high levels of rainfall; during the month of December you get the most rain around here, and the driest month of the year is July.
