This section of Mattole River in Humboldt County is 27.2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. The wonderful California scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're visiting here do
keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The Coast Ranges scenery is wonderful. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other good rivers for that around
here. The starting point is not too far from Eureka-Arcata-Fortuna, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so pack your sleeping bag. There are no other stretches to paddle along Mattole River than the Shelter Cove Road to Honeydew stretch. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people.

River regularly gets a great deal of rainfall; December is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest month is July. Put some time aside to spend at Fox Spring since you're here at Mattole River, and magnificent hiking is available along the Lightning Trail. Summer brings
highs in the 70's to Mattole River. Summer overnight lows drop down to the 50's. Highs during the winter are typically in the 50's, and winter nights come with lows in the 30's to Mattole River.
