The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Eureka-Arcata-Fortuna, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of Humboldt County and the cool fresh water beats anything. The Shelter Cove Road to Honeydew section of Mattole River in Humboldt County is 27.2 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might
find the rivers here more demanding, so keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one,
and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other rivers for that. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The beauty of the Coast Ranges is a great plus for this river. The Shelter Cove Road to Honeydew section is the only paddling section along Mattole River.
