This section of McCloud River is 10 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. If you're coming from Redding it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The natural beauty of California and the water flowing gracefully down McCloud River will make you feel great. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. The Fowler Campground to McCloud Reservoir section is one of a few
paddling sections in this river system. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The rivers for whitewater rafting and
kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. Whitewater paddling here in the Southern Cascade Range is a great experience. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camp stove.
Briefly about the general area: A large amount of rainfall falls
at McCloud River; the wettest month of the year is ordinarily January, that's the one that rains the most; July is when it's the driest. Just can't get enough of the Southern Cascade Range. Coyote Gulch is a pleasant spot to spend some time at; Big Springs is always fun to check
out. There's tremendous hiking along the Cone Point Trail, and if you're here you ought to go to Cone Point. This river has so much to offer. The Angel Meadow Trail offers hiking at its best. Summertime highs at McCloud River regularly tend to be in the 80's. Throughout the
dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 40's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's, and after the sun is down through the winter temperatures at McCloud River sink into the 20's.
