This stretch of Merced River - North Fork in Mariposa County is 17 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V(V+) section by American Whitewater. The starting point is not too far from Phoenix Lake-Cedar Ridge, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The Central Sierra Nevada scenery is wonderful. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. to Merced confluence stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it
an overnighter, so pack your camping stuff. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. The natural beauty of Mariposa County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
