The put-in is not too far from Madera, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This stretch of Merced River - South Fork in Mariposa County is 7.4 miles long and has been rated as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here. This is a
pretty decent length section, it's perfect for a one day trip. There are plenty of other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. The wild scenery of the Central Sierra Nevada is great. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short
distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The natural beauty of Mariposa County and the water flowing gracefully down Merced River - South Fork will make you feel great. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners.
