California whitewater, Mono Creek

Fresno county, Vermillion Dam to Mono Diversion section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV(V)     1.5 miles
The starting point is not too far from Visalia-Porterville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The Vermillion Dam to Mono Diversion section of Mono Creek in Fresno County is 1.5 miles long and has been rated as a class IV(V) section by American Whitewater. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the
night, but if you donít have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in California are often tougher than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that
many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The beautiful scenery of California and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. This is a somewhat short section so no need to bring snacks. When you're paddling down a Central Sierra
Nevada river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good rivers for that around here.

Briefly about the general area:
There's no such thing as a bad day of skiing at nearby Sierra Summit. Go for a hike on the Sherwin Lakes Trail, and don't leave Mono Creek without first going for a hike along the Mammoth Rock Trail. This river has it all. During the summertime months, highs commonly are in the 70's at Mono Creek. All through the moonlight hours it's ordinarily in the 40's.
