The starting point is not too far from Visalia-Porterville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The Vermillion Dam to Mono Diversion section of Mono Creek in Fresno County is 1.5 miles long and has been rated as a class IV(V) section by American Whitewater. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the |
night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in California are often tougher than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that

Briefly about
the general area: There's no such thing as a bad day of skiing at nearby Sierra Summit. Go for a hike on the Sherwin Lakes Trail, and don't leave Mono Creek without first going for a hike along the Mammoth Rock Trail.
This river has it all. During the summertime months, highs commonly are in the 70's at Mono Creek. All through the moonlight hours it's ordinarily in the 40's.
