The natural beauty of San Mateo County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. The Portola State Park to Memorial County Park stretch of Pescadero Creek is 9 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Santa Cruz-Watsonville, if you're not familiar with the area there's a
road map further down the page. The average California whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. Since you're on this site you
are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are not so many other good places for that around here. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The beauty of the Santa Cruz Mountains is a great plus for this river. There are no other sections
to paddle along Pescadero Creek than the Portola State Park to Memorial County Park section.
Briefly about the general area: There are great places to discover along the Coyote Ridge Trail, and if you're here why not explore Dark Gulch. The yearly rain here at Pescadero
Creek is about average; the month with most of the rain is January; the driest month of the year is July. But wait, there's more entertaining things to do in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Going for a hike on the Butano Ridge Loop Trail is always a wonderful adventure, and nearby you
hit upon Indian Point. This river is a great place to visit. During the warmest time of the year here at Pescadero Creek, high temperatures generally reach the 60's, and the nighttime is a little chillier of course, regularly in the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 50's with temperatures at Pescadero Creek dipping down into the 40's throughout winter nights.
