The beautiful scenery of Los Angeles / Ventura County and the playfulness of the water beats anything. The put-in is not too far from Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, as you can see on the road map further down. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside California you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. Getting
your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. The wild scenery of the Sierra Madre is great. This stretch of Piru Creek in California is 15 miles long and has been rated as a class IV section by American Whitewater.
Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other spots for that. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Pyramid Lake to Lake Piru section is one of them. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: Piru Creek is a location that is quite dried out usually; February
is the month that gets the most rain; July on the other hand is the driest. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Sierra Madre. Don't leave Piru Creek without first going for a hike along the Pothole Trail. Good hiking is available along the Canton Canyon Trail, and Ruby Canyon
is a great site to go to. All through the summer at Piru Creek highs are frequently in the 80's. Summer overnight lows drop down to the 60's. For the duration of the wintertime highs are generally in the 40's; through the dark hours in the winter at Piru Creek temperatures drop to the 30's.
