California whitewater - Piru Creek, Sierra Madre, Los Angeles / Ventura County
Los Angeles / Ventura
county,
Pyramid Lake to Lake Piru section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV 15 miles
The put-in is not too far from Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The Pyramid Lake to Lake Piru stretch of Piru Creek in California is 15 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV section. The average California whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here
you won't find a large number of other spots. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The campgrounds here at Piru Creek are pretty good. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature will make you glad you came. If you
hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. The scenic beauty of Los Angeles / Ventura County and the playfulness of the water beats anything. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The Sierra Madre scenery is wonderful.
Briefly about the general area: All through the summertime months at Piru Creek highs are generally in the 80's. Once the sun is down
it drops down to the 60's. All through the wintertime the highs are ordinarily in the 40's, and throughout the dark hours in the winter at Piru Creek temperatures fall to the 30's. Hiking is a popular thing to do around Piru Creek; Canton Canyon Trail is a nice local trail; Piru
Creek is next to Ruby Canyon which is positively worth stopping at. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Sierra Madre. Good hiking is available along the Pothole Trail. Piru Creek is a location that is quite dried up typically; February is when you get the most rain here, and July meanwhile is the driest month.
