The starting location is a short drive from Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are not so many other good spots for that around here. The Lake Piru to Santa Clara River stretch of Piru Creek in Ventura County is 4 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II     section. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is one of a small number of paddling sections in this river system, there are a few others too. Whitewater paddling here in the Sierra Madre is a great experience. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. This stretch is mid length, it's perfect for a one day trip. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. Briefly about the general area: Summertime brings highs in the 80's to Piru Creek while overnight   lows are frequently in the 60's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's, and overnight lows through the wintertime for Piru Creek tend to be in the 30's. All the outdoors cool things in the Sierra Madre will keep you coming back time and again. At Piru Creek you don’t see much precipitation; the month with most of the rain is February; the driest of the months is July. Modelo Canyon is a perfect place to visit nearby, and why not take a refreshing hike along the Pothole Trail.
