The starting location is a short drive from Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Lake Piru to Santa Clara River section is one of them. Getting your paddling muscles activated     and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. The river winds through the Sierra Madre and you get great scenery. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. There's camping available near Piru Creek. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a pretty small number of paddling spots. This stretch of Piru Creek in Ventura County is 4 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II section. The nature scenery of Ventura County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Briefly about the general area: Piru Creek is a location that is rather arid generally; the month of February is the wettest with most of the rain; July on the other hand is the driest. A good place in close proximity   to Piru Creek is Modelo Canyon, and going for a hike on the Pothole Trail is always a great adventure. For the period of the summer months at Piru Creek temperatures are mostly in the 80's with night lows in the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's while the cold winter nights at Piru Creek are in the 30's. You'll really wish for more hours in a day to enjoy all the cool things in the Sierra Madre.
