The average California whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. The Pit 4 Dam to Pit 4 Powerhouse section of Pit River in California is 7 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV section. You might be into
whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you won't find a large number of other rivers. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The wild scenery of the Southern Cascade Range is great. The scenic beauty of California and the playfulness of the water beats anything.
Briefly about the general area: Be careful coming to the Southern Cascade Range, you might not ever wanna return back home again. During the summer here at Pit River, high temperatures commonly get into the 80's. Summer overnight lows sink down to the
40's. All through the wintertime highs are usually in the 40's; nighttime lows at Pit River all through the wintertime ordinarily sink into the 20's. If you're here, you might as well take a look at Malinda Gulch, and do take a hike on the Pacific Crest Trail - section 17.
The high level of precipitation makes Pit River a pretty wet location; most of the rain falls during January, and July on the other hand is the driest.
