This section of Pit River in Shasta County is 9 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV section of whitewater. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Redding, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The average California whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The beauty of the Southern Cascade Range
is a great plus for this river. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. There are so many sections to paddle in this river system, the Pit 5 Dam to Pit 5 Powerhouse section is just one of many. This stretch is mid length, you
can easily run it on an afternoon. The wonderful Shasta County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: Big Bend Hot Springs is always fun to check out, and don't leave Pit River without first
going for a hike along the Nelson Flat Trail. At Pit River through the summer highs are in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 40's. During the winter highs are frequently in the 40's; overnight lows in the 20's for Pit River. So many fun things
to do in the Southern Cascade Range, not enough time. The high level of rainfall makes Pit River a reasonably wet location; January is the month that gets the most rain while July is typically the driest month.
