The scenic beauty of Siskiyou/ Shasta County and the water flowing gracefully down Sacramento River beats anything. The Dunsmuir to Castle Craig stretch of Sacramento River in California is 5 miles long and is a class III-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in California are often more challenging than in other states, so better not forget that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. There are some good hotels near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these
hotels fill up quick. If you're coming from Redding it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. The Dunsmuir
to Castle Craig section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon trip. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: This river is so good. Put some time aside to spend at Soda Springs if you're here at Sacramento River; if the weather is great, you can go for a hike along the Crags Trail. A trip to Soda Spring will
fill your soul with great feelings, and the Castle Lake Trail is a good hiking trail nearby. From a rainfall point of view Sacramento River is a quite typical place; of all the months in a year January is the one with the most rain, and July is when it's the driest. The warmest
time of the year at Sacramento River comes with high temperatures in the 80's. Once the sun is down it drops down to the 40's. For the period of the winter highs are in the 40's with temperatures at Sacramento River dipping down into the 20's through winter nights.
