The put-in is not too far from Redding, as you can see on the road map further down. The wonderful California scenery and the cool fresh water have people coming here. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in California is often tougher than elsewhere, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. You might
have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The Castle Craig to Sims Road stretch of Sacramento River in Siskiyou/ Shasta County is 9 miles long and has been determined
by American Whitewater to be a class IV section. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this is an area with plenty of spots for that.
Briefly about the general area: Have a good hiking adventure along the Crags Trail, and if you're here you can take a hike along the Castle Lake Trail. The amount of rainfall that falls at Sacramento River is close to the national average; most of the rain falls throughout January, and July
is when it's the driest. Summertime highs at Sacramento River regularly tend to be in the 80's with nighttime lows in the 40's. All through the winter the highs are frequently in the 40's; during the dark hours in the wintertime at Sacramento River temperatures dip to the 20's.
