The average California whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Redding, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The Sims Flat Campground to Lake Shasta stretch of Sacramento River is 13 miles long and has been determined     by American Whitewater to be a class IV section. The campgrounds here at Sacramento River are pretty good. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. Briefly about the general area: Sacramento River gets very little rainfall; during December this area sees the most rain, and the driest of the months is July. During the warm months at Sacramento River temperatures are mostly in the 80's while night lows are ordinarily in the   40's. Throughout the winter highs are usually in the 40's; overnight lows during the wintertime for Sacramento River tend to be in the 20's.
