CLASS IV 13 miles
The Sims Flat Campground to Lake Shasta stretch of Sacramento River in California is 13 miles long and it is classified as a class IV section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of California and the cool fresh water have people coming here. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places for that. If you're coming from Redding it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're
not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This stretch is long enough for an overnight
trip if you take your time, so pack your camp stove. The campgrounds here at Sacramento River are pretty good. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable.
