  If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside California you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. The Forks of Salmon to Somes Bar section of Salmon River in California is 19 miles long and is a class IV-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. If you're coming from Eureka-Arcata-Fortuna it's not a long drive at all to
    the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Whitewater paddling here in the Klamath Mountains is a great experience. This river system is full of great paddling
sections, the Forks of Salmon to Somes Bar section is just one of them. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so pack your camping stuff. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of  
good spots. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The natural beauty of California and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far.

Briefly about the general area:
Hiking is a popular thing to do around Salmon River; Horse Ridge National Scenic Trail is a tremendous local trail. What would a location like Salmon River be without out of the ordinary nearby characteristics like Grant Bluffs. There's good hiking along the Salmon Summit Recreation Trail, and Wilson Gulch is also a good place to look at.
