  The Mammoth Pool Dam to Mammoth Pool Powerhouse stretch of San Joaquin River is 7 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. The average California whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The nature scenery of Madera/Fresno County and the water flowing gracefully
    down San Joaquin River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in is not too far from Madera, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This stretch is mid length, it's perfect for a one
day trip. There are plenty of hotels here if you want to spend a night, but if you donít have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Mammoth Pool Dam to Mammoth Pool Powerhouse stretch is just one of many. There's camping available near San Joaquin River. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that. A good workout  
and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. Whitewater paddling here in the Central Sierra Nevada is a great experience.

Briefly about the general area:
Here at San Joaquin River you'll most likely meet some people from Big Creek; a trip to Sierra National Forest is a tremendous idea. But wait, there's more cool stuff to do in the Central Sierra Nevada. Head up to Sierra Summit and strap some skis to your feet, and the Red Mountain Trail offers hiking at its best. This is such a great river. All through the warm days of summer, highs regularly are in the 80's at San Joaquin River while overnight lows are frequently in the 40's.
