California whitewater - San Joaquin River, Central Sierra Nevada, Madera/Fresno County Madera/Fresno county, Mammoth Pool Dam to Mammoth Pool Powerhouse section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV-V     7 miles   This section of San Joaquin River is 7 miles long and is a class IV-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The nature scenery of Madera/Fresno County and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good rivers     for that around here. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The Central Sierra Nevada scenery is wonderful. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Mammoth Pool Dam to Mammoth Pool Powerhouse stretch is just one of many. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. Briefly about the general area: Summertime at San Joaquin River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's frequently in the 40's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 40's with temperatures at San Joaquin River dipping down into the 20's through winter   nights. San Joaquin River sees pretty high levels of rain; during January this area sees the most rain, and July meanwhile is the driest month.
