California whitewater - San Joaquin River, Central Sierra Nevada, Madera/Fresno County Madera/Fresno county, Kerckhoff Reservoir to Millerton Reservoir section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS III-V     11 miles   The Kerckhoff Reservoir to Millerton Reservoir stretch of San Joaquin River is 11 miles long and has been rated as a class III-V section by American Whitewater. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in California are often more challenging than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so pack your camp stove. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Getting a good workout and     a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good places. The nature scenery of California and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. The starting point is not too far from Madera, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The wild scenery of the Central Sierra Nevada is great. The Kerckhoff Reservoir to Millerton Reservoir section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. Briefly about the general area: The high level of rainfall makes San Joaquin River a quite   wet place; during January this area sees the most rain, and July is the month with the least moisture. Through the summertime months, highs usually are in the 80's at San Joaquin River; all through summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. Throughout the winter highs are in the 40's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to San Joaquin River.
