The Kerckhoff Reservoir to Millerton Reservoir stretch of San Joaquin River is 11 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-V section of whitewater. If you're coming from Madera it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The beauty of the Central Sierra Nevada
is a great plus for this river. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from
the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The beautiful scenery of California and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in California are often more challenging than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners.
