If you're coming from Madera it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The beauty of the Central Sierra Nevada     is a great plus for this river. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great attractions for lots of people. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The beautiful scenery of California and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in California are often more challenging than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. Briefly about the general area: Summertime   highs at San Joaquin River usually tend to be in the 80's, and the nighttime is slightly colder of course, mostly in the 40's. All through the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's; winter nights come with lows in the 20's to San Joaquin River. Lots of rainfall falls at San Joaquin River; January is the month that gets the most rain while July is ordinarily the driest month.
