California whitewater - San Joaquin River, Fresno-Madera County Fresno-Madera county, Kerchoff #1 PH to Kerchoff #2 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV+     1.9 miles   This stretch of San Joaquin River in California is 1.9 miles long and has been rated as a class IV+ section by American Whitewater. The starting point is not too far from Madera, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The nature scenery of California and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general     area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. This is a somewhat short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
