This section of Santa Margarita River is 9 miles long and is a class IV(V) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The Murrieta Creek to Sandia Creek Road stretch is the only paddling stretch along Santa Margarita River. The campgrounds here at Santa Margarita River are pretty good. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking,     either way there are not so many other good places for that around here. Lodging is available near the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in California tend to be more challenging than the national average, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. Whitewater paddling here in the Santa Ana Mountains is a great experience.
