California whitewater - Sespe Creek, Sierra Madre, Ventura County
Ventura
county,
Lion Campground to Highway 126 bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV-V 31.5 miles
The starting location is a short drive from Oxnard-Thousand Oaks-Ventura, as you can see on the road map further down. The Lion Campground to Highway 126 bridge stretch of Sespe Creek is 31.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV-V section. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but
if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear. Great exercise and a chance to spend
some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people. The river winds through the Sierra Madre and you get great scenery. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are not so many other good places for that around here. The wonderful Ventura County scenery and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. There are no other stretches to paddle along Sespe Creek than the Lion Campground to Highway 126 bridge stretch.
Briefly about the general area: So many entertaining things in the Sierra
Madre, just impressive. A short trip to Jackson Falls is always worthwhile, and magnificent hiking is available along the Reed Reef Trail. Go for a hike on the Last Chance Trail; East Fork Santa Paula Canyon is another great place to visit close by. Summertime at Sespe Creek
comes with high temperatures in the 90's. When the night sets in temperatures drop down into the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 60's, and winter nights come with lows in the 30's to Sespe Creek. This is a really good river. The Punch Bowl is an inspiring
place to stop by while you're here. Around Sespe Creek you don’t get a lot of rain; during February this area sees the most rain while July is ordinarily the driest month.
