  The scenic beauty of California and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Crescent City North, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The campgrounds here at Smith River - North Fork are pretty good. The Low Divide Road to Gasquet section of
    Smith River - North Fork in California is 13 miles long and it is classified as a class III-V section by American Whitewater. The wild scenery of the Coast Ranges is great. The Low Divide Road to Gasquet section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system. You might
be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a pretty small number of paddling places. This section is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.

Daytime highs through the winter are in the 50's while Smith River - North Fork overnight low temperatures throughout the wintertime are in the 40's. And if that's not sufficient there's loads more exciting stuff to do in the Coast Ranges. Why not take a refreshing hike along the French Hill Trail.
Smith River - North Fork gets a great deal of water; the month of December is the wettest with most of the rain; the driest month of the year is July. Smith River - North Fork is right by the Elk Camp Ridge Trail; if you feel like a little side spree, try Peridotite Canyon.
