California whitewater - Truckee River, Northern Sierra Nevada, Placer/ Nevada County
Placer/ Nevada
county,
Stampede Meadows Road to Floriston section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 27 miles
There is also a put in at the Alpine Meadows road, called River Ranch. And if someone were to put in at River Ranch, the paddle would be not 27 miles but more like 60 miles!!! We paddled River Ranch to Truckee on Sunday 7/19. It was shallow, some nice 2+, and because of the low water, many technical moves. Says Jim Hyatt
The beautiful scenery of Placer/ Nevada County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. This section of Truckee River is 27 miles long and is a class II-III section of
whitewater according to American Whitewater. The put-in is not too far from Reno-Sparks, as you can see on the road map further down. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. If you have the time you can make this a two day
trip, so why not pack your camping stuff too. There are so many stretches to paddle in this river system, the Stampede Meadows Road to Floriston stretch is just one of many. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with not too many other rivers for that. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The wild scenery of the Northern Sierra Nevada is great. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking
here in California are often more challenging than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Since you're
here at Truckee River why not check out Casey Canyon, and Mills Spring is always fun to check out. Be careful coming to the Northern Sierra Nevada, you might not ever wanna return back home again. The Mount Rose Trail is a delightful hiking trail near Truckee River, and do put
some time aside to spend at Rocky Canyon Spring while you're here at Truckee River. This river is a wonderful place to visit. Around Truckee River you don’t get a lot of rainfall; January is the month that gets the most snow, and July is when it's the driest. Summertime highs
