If you're coming from Reno-Sparks it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The scenic beauty of Nevada/ Sierra/ Washoe County and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Farad Powerhouse to Verdi stretch of Truckee River in California is 8 miles long and it is classified as a class III section by American Whitewater. The campgrounds here at Truckee River are pretty good.
Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in California is often tougher than elsewhere, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy.
Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you won't find many other paddling rivers. On this section you do get some distance, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The Farad Powerhouse to Verdi section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. The Northern Sierra Nevada scenery is wonderful.
Briefly about the general area: A magnificent spot next to Truckee River is Deep Canyon,
and close by you stumble on the Mount Rose Trail which is a good hiking trail. That right there is lots of entertaining stuff already but it goes on, the Northern Sierra Nevada has it all. During the warm days of summer highs here at Truckee River get into the 80's. All through
the dark hours of summer temperatures plunge down into the 40's. During the wintertime the highs are typically in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Truckee River. Truckee River is a location that is rather dried up mostly; the wettest month of the year is usually January, that's the one that rains the most; August meanwhile is the driest month.
