If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so better not forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The starting point is not too far from Reno-Sparks, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of California and the water flowing gracefully down Truckee River make the trip here worthwhile. This stretch of Truckee River in Nevada/ Sierra/ Washoe County is
8 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III section. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. The Farad Powerhouse to Verdi
stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a pretty small number of paddling places. The beauty of the Northern Sierra Nevada is a great plus for this river. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Deep Canyon is a great location to take a look at close by, and there's great hiking along
the Mount Rose Trail. Be careful coming to the Northern Sierra Nevada, you might not ever want to go home again. Summer at Truckee River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's while night lows are typically in the 40's. Daytime highs through the wintertime are in the 40's,
and overnight lows all through the wintertime for Truckee River tend to be in the 20's. It is very arid here at Truckee River regularly; the month of January is the wettest with most of the rain, and August is when it's the driest.
