county,
Grizzly Creek to Highway 36 bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II-III 5.2 miles
The starting point is not too far from Eureka-Arcata-Fortuna, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. This stretch of Van Duzen River in California is 5.2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. The natural beauty of Humboldt County and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. On this section you do get some distance, it's good length for a morning trip. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a
bit more challenging, so if you're not from around here don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. When you're paddling down a Coast Ranges river like
this one you always get great scenery along the way too. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Van Duzen River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Grizzly Creek to Highway 36 bridge stretch is the only one. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are not so many other good rivers for that around here.
