CLASS II-III 5.2 miles
The Grizzly Creek to Highway 36 bridge section of Van Duzen River in California is 5.2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in California is often more difficult than elsewhere, so don't forget that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. If you're coming from Eureka-Arcata-Fortuna it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The river winds through the Coast Ranges and you
get great scenery. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a pretty
small number of paddling rivers. The nature scenery of California and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This is the only paddling stretch along Van Duzen River. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more.
