The Grizzly Creek to Highway 36 bridge section of Van Duzen River in Humboldt County is 5.2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-III section. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're not from around here don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The nature scenery of California and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one,
but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Getting some good exercise and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. The starting location
is a short drive from Eureka-Arcata-Fortuna, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Van Duzen River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Grizzly Creek to Highway 36 bridge section is the only one. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you won't find a large number of other spots. When you're paddling down a Coast Ranges river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good
for a one day paddling trip.
Briefly about the general area: Through the summer at Van Duzen River highs are commonly in the 60's. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 50's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 50's with temperatures at Van
Duzen River dipping down into the 40's all through winter nights. Devils Elbow is an out of the ordinary thing to observe while you're here at Van Duzen River. Van Duzen River is a good spot of typical precipitation; November is the month that gets the most rain while July is ordinarily the driest month.
