California whitewater - West Walker River, Central Sierra Nevada, Mono County

Mono county, Leavitt Station Trailhead to Pickel Meadow section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS IV-V     2.3 miles
The natural beauty of Mono County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in California is often more difficult than elsewhere, so don't forget that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Leavitt Station Trailhead to Pickel Meadow section is one of them. When you're paddling down a Central Sierra Nevada river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there
are lots of good rivers for that around here. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. This section of West Walker River in Mono County is 2.3 miles long and has been rated as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. You might have to
settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. This is a somewhat short section so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch.

Briefly about the general area:
Summertime highs at West Walker River generally tend to be in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures descend down into the 50's. Highs during the wintertime are ordinarily in the 40's while the

cold winter nights at West Walker River are in the 20's. These mountains rock, just look at all the entertaining stuff to do in the Central Sierra Nevada.
It is very dried out here at West Walker River typically; through January this area sees the most rain, and July meanwhile is the driest month. A short visit to Silver Falls is always worthwhile; there's magnificent hiking along the Early Emigrant and Indian Trail.
