The Leavitt Station Trailhead to Pickel Meadow section of West Walker River in Mono County is 2.3 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV-V section of whitewater. The average California whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The wonderful California scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. The river winds through the Central Sierra Nevada and
you get great scenery. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. This is
a short paddling stretch so better bring some good walking shoes. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that.
Briefly about the general area: Not much rainfall falls here at West Walker River; during the month of January you get the most rain around here, and July is when it's the driest. So many amusing things to do in the Central
Sierra Nevada, not enough time. Silver Falls is a beautiful place to take a look at while you're at West Walker River, and why not take a refreshing hike along the Early Emigrant and Indian Trail. Summer at West Walker River comes with high temperatures in the 80's. Once the
sun is down it drops down to the 50's. For the duration of the winter this place gets highs in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at West Walker River.
