Colorado whitewater - Animas River, San Juan and Jemez Mountains, San Juan/ La Plata County San Juan/ La Plata county, Tacoma to Rockwood Rail Yard section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV-V     2.6 miles   This stretch of Animas River in Colorado is 2.6 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Colorado you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so better not forget that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The wonderful San Juan/ La Plata County scenery and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. The beautiful San Juan and Jemez Mountains scenery is an added bonus. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't     matter, there are lots of good rivers for that around here. The Tacoma to Rockwood Rail Yard stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. This stretch is short so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The starting location is a short drive from Durango, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. Briefly about the general area: Animas River gets a common amount of annual precipitation; all through the month of August you get the most rain around here while   June is usually the driest month. A great spot close to Animas River is Sawmill Canyon. Summer brings highs in the 70's to Animas River while night lows are generally in the 30's. The winter brings highs down to the 30's; winter nights come with lows in the 0's to Animas River.
