If you're coming from Silverthorne it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The nature scenery of Colorado and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. This stretch has has enough mileage, good for a one day paddling trip. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive
a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The average Colorado whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here
are not easy. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. This section of Arkansas River is 6 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V section.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime at Arkansas River comes with high temperatures in the 70's. Through the dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the
40's. For the period of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 20's with temperatures at Arkansas River dipping down into the 0's through winter nights. Ptarmigan Pass is in the vicinity of Arkansas River and is a pleasant spot. It is very dried up here at Arkansas River commonly; of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain, and the driest of the months is February.
