This stretch of Arkansas River is 6 miles long and it is classified as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so better not forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The scenic beauty of Chaffee County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. There are nice comfortable hotels here, but do book a room before you come because
it is a very popular destination. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. The
starting point is not too far from Silverthorne, as you can see on the road map further down. There are some good sections to paddle in this river system, the Granite to Numbers Launch Site section is one of them. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon.
Briefly about the general area: During the warm months, highs regularly are in the 70's at Arkansas River. For the period of the moonlight hours it's generally in the 40's. Highs during the winter are ordinarily in the 20's with temperatures at Arkansas
River dipping down into the 0's during winter nights. Nearby Ptarmigan Pass is a brilliant spot to go if you're at Arkansas River. At Arkansas River you don’t see much precipitation; July is the wettest month with most rain, and February is the month with the least moisture.
