Colorado whitewater - Blue River, Park Range, Summit County
Summit
county,
Blue River Camp Ground to FR 2400 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS III-IV 3 miles
This stretch of Blue River is 3 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. The beautiful scenery of Colorado and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. This section is quite short so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of places for that. There are some good sections
to paddle in this river system, the Blue River Camp Ground to FR 2400 section is one of them. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Colorado are often tougher than in other states, so don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The
nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The wild scenery of the Park Range is great. The put-in is not too far from Silverthorne, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
Briefly about the general area: The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Blue River. Summer overnight lows dip down to the 40's. For the duration of the wintertime the highs are usually
in the 20's with winter lows in the-10's overnight here at Blue River. That right there is a lot of exciting stuff already but it goes on, the Park Range has it all. Erwin Gulch is next to Blue River and is beyond doubt a perfect location to go to, and you can go for a hike on
the Slate Creek Trail. This river has it all. Blue River is a location that is rather dried up ordinarily; of all the months in a year August is the one with the most rain, and the driest of the months is February. If you're into cool geologic characteristics, try Target Bluff, and going for a hike on the Gore Range Trail is always a fine adventure.
