La Plata
county,
to Animas River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS V+ 3 miles
The to Animas River section of Canyon Creek is 3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V+ section. The scenic beauty of La Plata County and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Colorado is often more difficult than elsewhere, so better not forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. When you're paddling down a San Juan and Jemez Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. There are many good hotels to choose from, but you'd better reserve
in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This is a somewhat short section so no need to bring snacks. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Durango, if you're
not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Canyon Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the to Animas River stretch is the only one. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
