The to Animas River section of Canyon Creek is 3 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class V+ section. The wonderful Colorado scenery and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. No shortage of good hotels, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The starting point is not too far from Durango, as you can see on the road map further down. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so you'd better keep in mind
that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This is a bit of a short stretch so better bring some good walking shoes. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and
near. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. The river winds through the San Juan and Jemez Mountains and you get great scenery. The to Animas River section is the only paddling section along Canyon Creek.
Briefly about the general area: Around Canyon Creek you don’t get a lot of precipitation; most of the rain falls through August, and June is the month with the least moisture. Sawmill Canyon is next to Canyon Creek and is a fine site. High temperatures at Canyon Creek during the
summer months are in the 70's. During the moonlight hours it's ordinarily in the 30's. The winter brings highs down to the 30's with temperatures at Canyon Creek dipping down into the 0's through winter nights.
