The natural beauty of Colorado and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so you'd better keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. This stretch of Conejos River in Colorado is 6.4 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-IV section of whitewater. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance
because these hotels fill up quick. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. Conejos River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Platoro Reservoir to South Fork Conejos stretch is the only one. For all you camping
people there are campgrounds nearby. The beautiful San Juan and Jemez Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. This is a pretty decent length section, good for a one day paddling trip.
Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Conejos River a wet place; during the month of March you get the most snow around here, and June is the month with the least moisture. All through the warmest time of the year highs here
at Conejos River reach the 60's. During the dark hours of summer temperatures fall down into the 40's. Highs throughout the winter are mostly in the 30's with temperatures at Conejos River dipping down into the 0's through winter nights. This river is so perfect. You just can't
envision the amount of outdoors entertaining stuff the San Juan and Jemez Mountains has to offer. The Bear Lake Trail offers hiking at its best, and why not take a refreshing hike along the Conejos Trail. Roaring Gulch is a great spot to stop at in close proximity to Conejos River, and a cool spot to check out is The Pinnacles.
