The scenic beauty of Conejos County and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The Platoro Reservoir to South Fork Conejos stretch of Conejos River is 6.4 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II-IV section. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. The
rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The river winds through the San Juan
and Jemez Mountains and you get great scenery. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. There are no other sections to paddle along Conejos River than the Platoro Reservoir to South Fork Conejos section.
Briefly about the general area: If the weather is great here at Conejos River, you can go for a hike along the Conejos Trail, and you need to stop by The Pinnacles if you're here. Conejos River frequently gets a good deal of rainfall; March is the wettest month with most snow, and the driest
month is June. The surroundings of this river have so much to offer. You just can't picture the amount of outdoors enjoyable things the San Juan and Jemez Mountains has to offer. Going for a hike along the Bear Lake Trail will let you absorb the natural beauty of this region;
Roaring Gulch is in the neighborhood, and is a delightful location. Summertime highs at Conejos River typically tend to be in the 60's while night lows are typically in the 40's. All through the wintertime this place gets highs in the 30's with temperatures at Conejos River dipping down into the 0's throughout winter nights.
