Colorado whitewater - Crystal River, Pitkin County Pitkin county, Penny Hot Springs to Avalanche Creek section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS IV-V     2.1 miles   The scenic beauty of Pitkin County and the water flowing gracefully down Crystal River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. This section of Crystal River in Colorado is 2.1 miles long and     is according to American Whitewater a class IV-V section of whitewater. The Penny Hot Springs to Avalanche Creek section is one of many paddling sections in this river system. This is a pretty short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling places. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Briefly about the general area: A short journey to Penny Hot Springs is always worthwhile. Through the warmest time of the year at Crystal River highs are mostly in the 80's, and all through summer nights temperatures are in the 50's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 30's while   the cold winter nights at Crystal River are in the 0's. Crystal River is pretty waterless usually; most of the rain falls during October, and February is when it's the driest.
