If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Colorado you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. This stretch of Dolores River in Colorado is 39 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The beautiful scenery of Colorado and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. A stretch of this length does require some
preparations, so it looks like you will be camping out. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't
matter, there are not so many other good rivers for that around here. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people.
Briefly about the general area: During the warmest time of the year highs here at Dolores River reach the 70's, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 30's. For the period of the winter the highs are typically in the 30's; winter nights come with lows in the 0's to Dolores River. Put some time aside to spend at Drift Fence Spring if you're here at Dolores
River, and there is a good hiking trail close by called the Eagle Peak Trail. A nice location in the neighborhood of Dolores River is Loading Pen Canyon, and on a pleasant day you can take a hike along the Lost Canyon Stock Driveway. Dolores River gets very little rainfall; most of the snow falls all through March; June is when it's the driest. This river is a great place to visit.
