Mesa

Gateway to Colorado River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II+(IV) 30 miles
The wonderful Mesa County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Dolores River make the trip here worthwhile. The Gateway to Colorado River section of Dolores River is 30 miles long and is a class II+(IV) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so better bring your camping gear along. Whitewater rafting
and kayaking spots in Colorado are harder than the national norm, so better not forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Since you're on this
site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other places for that.
Briefly about the general area: Cottonwood Canyon is a glorious place to spend some time at. Summertime brings highs in the 90's to Dolores River. Once the sun is down it descends down to the 60's. High temperatures through the winter are normally in the 30's with temperatures at Dolores River dipping down into the 10's through winter nights. At Dolores River you don’t see much rainfall; of all the months in a year October is the one with the most rain; the driest month is February.
