The scenic beauty of Mesa County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Colorado are harder than the national norm, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other
good places for that around here. This section of Dolores River in Colorado is 30 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II+(IV) section of whitewater. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Gateway to Colorado River stretch is one
of them. A section like this is is of course not run in a single day, so it looks like you will be camping out. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.

High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 30's while the cold winter nights at Dolores River are in the 10's.
