CLASS I-II 2 miles
The scenic beauty of Routt County and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The 2 mi above Mad Creek to Mad Creek section of Elk River in Routt County is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Colorado are harder than the national norm, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the 2 mi above Mad Creek to Mad Creek stretch is one
of them. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. When you're paddling down a Park Range river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This section is quite short so you'd better be prepared
to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling spots. There are many good hotels to choose from, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.

back persistently. There are fine locations to discover along the Red Dirt Trail, and don't leave Elk River without first going for a hike along the Big Creek Bridge Trail.
