Colorado whitewater - Elk River, Park Range, Routt County
Routt
county,
2 mi above Mad Creek to Mad Creek section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-II 2 miles
This stretch of Elk River in Routt County is 2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class I-II section. The nature scenery of Colorado and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. The average Colorado whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The Park Range scenery is wonderful. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This section is quite short so
no need to bring snacks. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you won't find many other paddling places. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. There are many good hotels
to choose from, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the 2 mi above Mad Creek to Mad Creek section is one of them.
