The natural beauty of Gunnison County and the water flowing gracefully down Escalante Creek are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so better not forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The put-in is not too far from Montrose, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. There are no other sections to paddle along Escalante Creek than the Escalante Forks to Captain Smith's Cabin section. Getting

Escalante Creek are pretty good. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you won't find a large number of other places. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. When you're paddling down a Uncompahgre Plateau Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too.

That right there is lots of cool stuff already but it goes on, the Uncompahgre Plateau Mountains has it all. On a good day at Escalante Creek you can take a hike along the McCarthy Trail, and a short visit to Caps Spring is always worthwhile. There is a great hiking trail in the
neighborhood of Escalante Creek called the Gunnison Trail; Cottonwood Spring is a beautiful place to take a look at while you're at Escalante Creek. This river is a great place to visit. Escalante Creek gets very little rain; the month of October is the wettest with most of
the rain, and January is when it's the driest. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 90's to Escalante Creek. Once the sun is down it drops down to the 60's. Through the wintertime highs are regularly in the 30's, and nighttime lows all through the winter for Escalante Creek tend to be in the 10's.
