Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Colorado is often tougher than elsewhere, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. This section of Escalante Creek in Colorado is 6.5 miles long and is a class V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. The starting location is a short drive from Montrose, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. There are campgrounds quite near the river where
you can camp. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This is the only paddling stretch along Escalante Creek. You might be into whitewater rafting
or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you won't find a large number of other spots. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip. The beauty of the Uncompahgre Plateau Mountains is a great plus for this river. The wonderful Colorado scenery and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile.

to explore Cottonwood Spring, and why not take a refreshing hike along the McCarthy Trail. Caps Spring is a great local attraction, and Escalante Creek is right by the Gunnison Trail. For the duration of the months of summer highs here at Escalante Creek get into the 90's.
Summer nighttime lows fall down to the 60's. For the period of the wintertime highs are generally in the 30's with temperatures at Escalante Creek dipping down into the 10's through winter nights. Escalante Creek is mostly a rather dried up site; through the month of October you get the most rain around here while January is frequently the driest month.
