The Upper section of Fryingpan River is 5.7 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV-V section of whitewater. The wonderful Colorado scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream have people coming here. The Upper stretch is the only paddling stretch along Fryingpan River. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's good length for a morning trip. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area
you'll find lots of paddling places. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so better not forget
that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. If you're coming from Edwards it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. Whitewater paddling here in the Sawatch Range is a great experience. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here.
Briefly about the general area: The Chapman Trail is a magnificent hiking trail in the neighborhood of Fryingpan River; a tremendous place to explore is Lime Creek Canyon. So much enjoyable
stuff to do in the Sawatch Range, not enough time. Near Fryingpan River you stumble on the Sawyer Lake Trail which is a glorious hiking trail. Not much precipitation falls here at Fryingpan River; the wettest month of the year is regularly July, that's the one that rains the
most, and the driest month is February. The warmest time of the year brings highs in the 80's to Fryingpan River, and during the night it cools down to the 40's. Through the winter this place gets highs in the 30's; throughout the dark hours in the winter at Fryingpan River temperatures drop to the 0's.
