Fremont
county,
Bear Gulch to Canon City section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV+ 15 miles
The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Colorado are often more challenging than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. The beautiful scenery of Colorado and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you're coming from Canon City it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, as you can see on the road map further down. This is the only paddling section along Grape Creek. This section is long enough
for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. Great exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking
or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other good places for that around here. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The Bear Gulch to Canon City stretch of Grape Creek is 15 miles long and is a class IV+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater.
Briefly about the general area: Coming to this river is always a good idea. At Grape Creek you don’t see much precipitation; the wettest month of the
year is generally August, that's the one that rains the most, and January on the other hand is the driest. For the period of the summer at Grape Creek highs are frequently in the 70's. Summer night lows fall down to the 40's. Daytime highs during the winter are in the 20's
while the cold winter nights at Grape Creek are in the-10's. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Stultz Trail, and the wonderful folks of Canon City like to hang out close by. The Tanner Trail offers hiking at its best; nearby Tanner Gulch is a splendid spot to go.
