This section of Gunnison River in Montrose County is 16 miles long and has been rated as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of Colorado and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Colorado are often more challenging than in other states, so keep
in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a pretty small number
of paddling rivers. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well.
Briefly about the general area: Not much rain falls here at Gunnison River; through October this area sees the most rain, and the driest month of the year is June. At this river you will never have a bad time. A short journey to Lions Spring is always worthwhile, and no need to travel far
to visit interesting stuff like Sunset View. High temperatures at Gunnison River during the months of summer are in the 80's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 50's. Through the wintertime highs are generally in the 30's, and all through the dark hours in the
wintertime at Gunnison River temperatures drop to the 10's. Nearby Jones Draw is a tremendous location to go if you're at Gunnison River, and High Point is a great place to visit while in the vicinity.
