The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Colorado are often tougher than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. This stretch of Hermosa Creek in La Plata County is 24 miles long and has been rated as a class IV-V section by American Whitewater. If you're coming from Durango it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The beautiful scenery of La Plata County and the cool fresh water
are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Lodging is available near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. Since you're on this site
you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so why not pack your camping stuff too. The Hermosa Park to US 550 section is the only paddling section along Hermosa Creek.

June is when it's the driest. Hermosa Creek is near Stag Draw which is without doubt worth checking out. Summer at Hermosa Creek arrives with high temperatures in the 70's while night lows are ordinarily in the 30's. The winter brings highs down to the 30's, and overnight lows in the 0's for Hermosa Creek.
