The nature scenery of Rio Arriba (NM) / Archuleta County and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. The Lower 25 miles to San Juan confluence stretch of Navajo River is 25 miles long and is a class I-II section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The average Colorado whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. Getting a good workout and just hanging out with mother
nature are great attractions for lots of people. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good spots. The campgrounds here at Navajo River are pretty good. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short
distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The beautiful San Juan and Jemez Mountains scenery is an added bonus. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camping stuff.
Briefly about the general area: Not much rain falls here at Navajo River; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain while June is commonly the driest month. During the
summer months, highs generally are in the 80's at Navajo River. Once the sun is down it dips down to the 40's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 30's, and winter nights come with lows in the 0's to Navajo River.
