CLASS III-V 10 miles
This stretch of Piedra River in Colorado is 10 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-V section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The starting point is not too far from Durango, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. Not too many hotels
nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. There are a few other stretches in this river system that
can be paddled as well. The wonderful Hinsdale/ Archuleta County scenery and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. The San Juan Mountains scenery is wonderful. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too.
