The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Durango, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The wonderful Hinsdale/ Archuleta County scenery and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. The 1st Fork Bridge to Lower     Piedra Campgound stretch of Piedra River in Colorado is 10 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-V section. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camping stuff. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The wild scenery of the San Juan and Jemez Mountains is great. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Briefly about the general area: Piedra River gets a common amount of yearly rainfall; August is the month that gets the most rain; the driest month is June. Throughout the summer months here at Piedra River,   high temperatures frequently get into the 80's. For the duration of the moonlight hours it's generally in the 40's. For the duration of the wintertime this place gets highs in the 30's, and overnight lows in the 0's for Piedra River. Since you're here at Piedra River why not go to Peterson Gulch.
