If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Colorado you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Durango, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The wonderful Hinsdale/ Archuleta County scenery and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad you came. Piedra Campgound stretch of Piedra River in Colorado is 10 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-V section. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camping stuff. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There are a few other
sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. The wild scenery of the San Juan and Jemez Mountains is great. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good places for that around here. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
