The Lower Piedra Campground to Navajo Reservation stretch of Piedra River in Archuleta County is 20 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. If you're coming from Durango it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack
your sleeping bag too. The natural beauty of Archuleta County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're not from around
here don't forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The river winds through the San Juan and Jemez Mountains and you get great scenery. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. The campgrounds here at Piedra River are pretty good. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Lower Piedra Campground to Navajo Reservation section is one of them. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that.
