The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so better not forget that many runs in this state are not easy. The put-in location is a short drive from Durango, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The beautiful scenery of Archuleta County and the water flowing gracefully down Piedra River attract people from near and far. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. This stretch
is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. This stretch of Piedra River in Archuleta County is 20 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-III section of whitewater. Great exercise and spending some
quality time in nature will make you glad you came. Whitewater paddling here in the San Juan Mountains is a great experience. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots.
Briefly about the general area: Throughout the warm days of summer, highs typically are in the 80's at Piedra River. Summer overnight
lows fall down to the 40's. Daytime highs through the winter are in the 30's, and after the sun is down during the wintertime temperatures at Piedra River fall into the 0's. Pine Tree Canyon is a great place to look at. Not much precipitation falls here at Piedra River; the month of August is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest month of the year is June.
