If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The Piney Crossing to State Bridge section of Piney River in Colorado is 19 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V+ section. The scenic beauty of Eagle County and the cool fresh water have people coming here. If you hurry you can run this stretch in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your sleeping bag.
Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. Since you're on this
site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a large number of paddling spots. When you're paddling down a Park Range river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Edwards, as you can see on the road map further down. There are no other stretches to paddle along Piney River than the Piney Crossing to State Bridge stretch. The campgrounds here at Piney River are pretty good.
Briefly about the general area: Life's too short to enjoy all the
amusing things in the Park Range. A visit to Piney River wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Kayser Spring. A short trip to Split Trough Spring is always worthwhile, and you could always look at Cabin Gulch. Piney River is a location that is rather arid mostly; throughout
the month of July you get the most rain around here while February is the month with the least amount of precipitation. For the period of the long summer days here at Piney River, high temperatures usually reach the 70's. All through the dark hours of summer temperatures fall down into the 40's. During the winter highs are in the 30's, and night lows in the 0's for Piney River.
